MAME (an acronym of Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is an emulator application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms. The intention is to preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The aim of MAME is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines; the ability to actually play the games is considered 'a nice side effect'. Joystiq has listed MAME as an application that every gamer should have.

  1. Oct 26, 2018 Some MAME game require both the ROM and a CHD file so it all depends on which games you're trying to do. I would suggest grabbing a copy of a game that you know doesn't require a CHD (something like frogger is a great one) for testing to make sure you have mame set up correctly.
  2. Yes, the games which have CHD files associated with them still have a separate 'rom file' as well. The 'rom file' should still be placed with all other rom files (ie: in the mame/roms folder). Then all the CHD specific image files should be placed inside a new folder (which you create) located within the 'mame/roms' folder.
  3. Download and install the latest version of Mame (this guide has been update for MAME version 0.277) Download the Mac IIci rom files from the internet archive, and put the macplus.zip in your ROM folder; Download my 2GB System 7.5.5 drive image and rename to mac755.chd Most ROM's in MAME don't need a CHD.
